  • ATS and ETS 2 V1.61 available to download now
  • Includes proximity exploration mechanic and improved truck materials
  • Map updates pave the way for Road Trip and Coaches modes

A new Euro Truck Simulator 2 update is available to download now, joining its sister title, American Truck Simulator, in V1.61.

Although both updates are relatively small, they do offer hope that each respective game’s upcoming major DLC packs, Coaches and Road Trip, are due for imminent release, thanks to minor map updates.

Find out all the changes coming in SCS Software’s trucking titles below.

First, we’ll run through the changes both games have in common. A new proximity exploration mechanic has been added to both games, meaning players no longer need to fastidiously cover every inch of a road for it to count as ‘explored’.

The Czech studio’s improved material system has also been rolled out across more trucks, offering more realistic lighting across multiple material types, like leather, plastic and cloth. In ATS, the International LT and International LoneStar trucks get the upgrade, while in ETS 2, it’s the Volvo FH Series 6, Volvo FH Series 5 and Volvo FH Series 4 trucks.

In terms of vehicles, ETS 2’s livestock trailers have been overhauled for V1.61, with a new dual-wheeled low chassis variant replacing the old belly-axled iteration. Customisation options for this include two chassis variants: a straight three-axle and a lowered three-axle, split between aluminium and paintable body types.

Players who own the Schwarzmüller Trailer Pack DLC will also be able to access a fully revised low-loading trailer type, plus accessories, to match the brand’s real-world innovations.

Perhaps the most important aspect of V1.61, however, is the map changes made in anticipation of the upcoming Coaches mode. Bus stations in Karlstad, Aarhus, and Thessaloniki have been improved, and an all-new station now appears in Heraklion.

Border crossings have also been upgraded to account for the new game mode, but a release date has yet to be revealed.

American Truck Simulator V1.61

V1.61 adds new cargo types, including seed containers, trailers and trusses to ATS, but it’s the addition of several Tourist Boards across California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota (WIP) that lays the ground for the game’s upcoming Road Trip DLC.

Again, a release date has not been revealed for Road Trip mode, which will let players explore the map in Ford, Dodge and RAM cars, pickups, and SUVs, but V1.61’s map updates suggest it’s imminent.
